IMAs Frequently Asked Questions
What are the key benefits of an IMA?
An IMA integrates multiple RF functions into a compact assembly. Minimizing interconnections in the RF chain results in a lower footprint and reduced weight. Proper mechanical and thermal design also provides a more ruggedized housing engineered to sustain performance in challenging environments, including ambient temperature shifts, shock, and vibration.
Is hermetic sealing standard in an IMA?
Not all IMAs are designed to meet hermeticity requirements. In many applications, the requirement is met at the next higher-level assembly. If an IMA has a hermeticity requirement, laser welding is a standard manufacturing process. TRAK TECOM offers a wide range of IMA products that are compliant with MIL-STD-883 / 202 for hermeticity. These assemblies are laser welded.
What are the most common RF functionalities embedded in TRAK TECOM IMAs?
The bulk of TRAK TECOM's rich history in IMA design and production is centered around Up/Down Converters, Switched Filter Banks, Low Phase Noise Oscillators, and T/R switches. We have the in-depth design knowledge and manufacturing experience to produce a quality IMA with repeatable performance from LRIP to full production volumes.
What types of RF interfaces do IMAs support?
TRAK TECOM's IMA products offer standard coaxial interfaces covering frequency ranges up to 50 GHz. Our field-replaceable connectors include SMA, SSMA, and 2.4 mm. For high-power and/or super-low-loss applications, we produce units with waveguide interfaces. Our IMAs designed specifically for high-density backplane applications support blind-mate RF connections utilizing SMPS and Nano-RF contacts as defined by OpenVPX and SOSA-aligned configurations.
