Timing Products frequently asked questions
What is holdover in a GPS timing system and why is it important?
Holdover is the ability of a timing system to maintain accurate timing and frequency for an extended time after the loss of a GPS reference. Holdover performance is especially important in mission-critical, communications, and defense applications. Refer to our timing product data sheets for holdover performance specifications.
Do TRAK TECOM timing products support secure network protocols?
Yes. TRAK TECOM timing products support HTTPS, SSH, and SNMPv3 to meet secure network access and management requirements for mission-critical timing applications.
What is the maximum coaxial cable length from a GPS antenna to the GPS receiver?
The maximum coaxial cable length depends on the loss per foot of the coaxial cable being used. TRAK TECOM timing systems are provided with a GPS antenna that has 35 dB of gain. A maximum coaxial cable loss of 25 dB is recommended. For example, low-loss LMR-400 cable has a loss of approximately 5.1 dB per 100 feet at 1575 MHz. Using this cable, the maximum cable length is approximately 500 feet.
What is the composite signal on TRAK TECOM timing products?
The composite signal is a 5 MHz digital timing signal that also provides a 1 PPS epoch over a single coaxial cable. The 5 MHz signal operates at a 25% duty cycle. At the 1 PPS epoch, the duty cycle changes from 25% to 75% for one cycle. This provides both a reference frequency and 1 PPS timing reference through a single coaxial connection.
Can TRAK TECOM timing products be upgraded in the field?
Yes. TRAK TECOM 8835 and 9100 Series timing products support field-upgradeable software and firmware. An integrated web server with a graphical user interface (GUI) provides convenient access for performing software and firmware upgrades in the field.
